August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to celebrate and, at the same time, learn more about how these amazing little organs work together to help us see and experience the world around us!
The human eye works like a super high-tech camera:
Light enters through the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.
The light then passes through the pupil, the black circular opening in the center of your iris (the coloured part). The pupil gets bigger or smaller to control how much light goes in.
Next, light hits the lens, which focuses it onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens can change shape to help us see things clearly at different distances (just like focusing a camera!).
The retina is covered in special cells called photoreceptors that turn light into electrical signals.
These signals travel along the optic nerve to the brain, where they’re turned into the images we see!
For children, healthy eyes are especially important. In fact, clear vision not only helps them learn better in school but also allows them to play confidently and explore the world safely. Moreover, regular eye check-ups can catch potential issues early on; as a result, young eyes stay strong, healthy, and ready for every adventure.
💙 This August, let’s make sure every child’s vision stays clear and bright!
